1 KINGS 1
The King God Chooses
Devotional Reflection
Adonijah declares, “I will be king,” gathering power, influence, and public approval. Yet the throne does not belong to the loudest claimant; it belongs to the one established by God. While human ambition pushes itself forward, God quietly fulfills His promise through Solomon.
This chapter exposes the instinct of every heart: we want to rule our own lives. Like Adonijah, we build small kingdoms of control, recognition, and comfort. But self-made kingship always produces anxiety because it must constantly defend itself.
Solomon’s anointing points beyond himself to Jesus, the true Son of David. Christ did not seize His throne through self-promotion. He received His kingdom through humility, obedience, suffering, and resurrection. When we behold the rightful King, we are freed from the exhausting work of trying to be sovereign.
One Truth to Behold
God’s promised King will reign, despite human pride, weakness, or opposition.
One Truth to Become
Because Christ securely reigns, become a person who serves rather than strives, trusts rather than controls, and gives glory rather than seeks it.
One Question to Meditate On
Where am I saying, “I will be king,” instead of joyfully surrendering that part of my life to Jesus?
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, forgive me for trying to rule what belongs to You. Quiet my striving, deepen my trust, and teach me to serve with humility. Reign over every part of my heart and life. Amen.
