October 28: The Light of Brotherly Love
1 John 2:7-11
The command to love is both old and new. It is old because God has always required love for our neighbor. It is new because Jesus revealed its fullest meaning by laying down His life for His people.
John refuses to separate spirituality from relationships. A person may speak confidently about God, yet hatred, resentment, and contempt reveal darkness within the heart. Love does not mean approving everything another person does. It means seeking that person’s good, refusing revenge, and extending the grace we have received.
Jesus loved us when we were not lovable. At the cross, He did not merely feel affection toward His enemies; He sacrificed Himself to reconcile them to God. His love becomes both our security and our pattern.
We cannot manufacture this love through willpower alone. It grows as we remember that Christ saw the worst in us and moved toward us with mercy.
ONE TRUTH TO BEHOLD
Jesus loved His enemies sacrificially and brought them from darkness into light.
ONE TRUTH TO BECOME
Become a person who releases resentment, pursues reconciliation, and seeks the good of others.
ONE QUESTION TO MEDITATE ON
Whom am I claiming to love while quietly holding bitterness, contempt, or unforgiveness against them?
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord Jesus, expose the darkness of resentment within me. Fill me with Your love and give me grace to forgive, serve, and pursue peace. Amen.
