October 24: The Freedom of Confession
Read: 1 John 1:8-10
John warns that claiming to have no sin is self-deception. Sin does not disappear because we deny it, rename it, or compare ourselves favorably with others. Refusing confession does not protect us; it keeps us imprisoned.
But confession opens the door to freedom. To confess means agreeing with God about our sin without excuses or self-defense. We can do this because God is “faithful and just to forgive.”
It may seem surprising that forgiveness is called just. God does not forgive by ignoring sin. He forgives because Jesus has already borne its judgment. At the cross, mercy and justice met. God remains righteous while declaring sinners righteous through faith in Christ.
Therefore, confession is not begging an unwilling God to show mercy. It is returning to the Father who has already provided cleansing through His Son.
ONE TRUTH TO BEHOLD
God faithfully and justly forgives confessed sin because Christ has fully paid its penalty.
ONE TRUTH TO BECOME
Become a person who confesses sin honestly, receives grace humbly, and abandons self-justification.
ONE QUESTION TO MEDITATE ON
What sin am I currently excusing, minimizing, or blaming upon someone else?
CLOSING PRAYER
Faithful Father, free me from self-deception. Give me humility to confess without excuses and faith to receive the forgiveness secured by Jesus. Amen
