November 5: Love in Deed and Truth
1 John 3:16-18
John defines love by pointing to Jesus: “He laid down his life for us.” Christian love is not merely warm emotion or kind language. It willingly sacrifices for another person’s good.
John makes this practical. When we see a brother or sister in need and possess the resources to help, love opens its heart rather than turning away. Words of concern mean little when we continually refuse to act.
Yet we must begin with Christ’s love for us. We cannot sustain sacrificial love by guilt or willpower. Jesus saw our greatest need and did not remain safely distant. He entered our poverty, carried our guilt, and gave His life to save us.
Because our deepest needs have been met in Him, we are free to loosen our grip upon time, money, comfort, and convenience. We do not give in order to become loved; we give because we already are.
ONE TRUTH TO BEHOLD
Jesus revealed true love by laying down His life to meet our deepest need.
ONE TRUTH TO BECOME
Become a person whose love moves beyond words into generous, costly, and practical action.
ONE QUESTION TO MEDITATE ON
What need has God placed before me that I have acknowledged with words but avoided through inaction?
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me sacrificially. Open my heart and hands so that Your love becomes visible through my actions. Amen.
